Come on and take a look at the new, improved

version of Room 1!

More photos on the Gallery page.

Finally the year 7's and year 8's unite as one!

We are studying South Africa and the

Commonwealth Games for the 2nd half of term 3.

We are looking at many aspects of the culture and history of

South Africa.

Here is a short video from the National Geographic Website -

you may learn something new about the fascinating countries

in Southern Africa.

HOMEWORK TERM 3:

HOMEWORK GRID - Many of the activities suggested on the grid are a way of encouraging your child to increase their key competencies.  There is a focus on self-managing, participating and contributing, relating to others and physical exercise.  The spelling and research aspects will be followed up at school and oral language often links to current events - so watching the news and discussing main items will help you child in this area.

Year 7 & 8 Students need to think about balance when it comes to extra-curricular activities - that way they will be better prepared to handle the work load of year 9 and onwards.

The main purpose is to develop your childs time management and

self-managing skills.

Each week I will monitor spelling homework and for a part of this term students are working on country studies which they can spend time researching and collecting information for as a part of their homework.  There is alot of class time allowed for these projects also.

Whats Going On For Us This Term?

First we are taking a trip Around the World.  We will be looking at other countries and cultures and taking an up close and personal look at the Countries in the African Continent.

Miss Gee will be teaching and testing us on our geography knowledge, map and atlas skills and research abilities.

To see what will will be getting better at pop in and take a look at our Term 3 Learning Journeys...

LIFE EDUCATION TRAVELLING CLASSROOM

Room 1 and Room 8 went through the Life Education Bus together.  We were able to partner up and

have awesome discussions about health and nutrition.  The main focus for our sessions was WOF!

It compared our bodies to a car and a car needing a Warrant Of Fitness to be able to function well

and safely).

Here is a link for you to find out more about the Life Education Trust Travelling Classroom.

DARE TO MAKE A CHOICE!

Wow - we have learnt an enormous amount thanks to Constable Hayden!  From answering a huge number of questions we had about Drugs, Alcohol and The Law.  Most lessons focused around the temptations and choices we will be presented with in the future.  The next 3-4 years will be full of opportunities for us to grow as people and take steps towards our future goals.  The main messages have been:

EVERY CHOICE WE MAKE HAS A CONSEQUENCE - ITS UP TO US WHETHER OR NOT THESE CHOICES KEEP US ON A PATH TOWARDS OUR GOALS OR TAKE US AWAY FROM THEM.

THE FRIENDS WE CHOOSE TO HANG OUT WITH CAN HAVE A HUGE IMPACT ON OUR ABILITY TO REACH OUR LIFE LONG GOALS.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CHOICES WE MAKE INVOLVING LEGAL ACTIONS AND THE ONES WE MAKE INVOLVING ILLEGAL ACTIONS.  IF WE TOOK 10 SECONDS TO STOP AND THINK ABOUT THE NEXT ACTION WE MAY JUST CHANGE OUR MINDS.

At home you can try out our ability to use either a Passive, Assertive or Aggressive response to peer pressure.

If you give us a scenario we can act out appropriate responses - this might help us deal with tough choices in the future.

MATHS/NUMERACY:

Maths Strands for Term 2 are:

Measurement - Time and Temperature

Some of the things we will be focusing on is using measuring tools accurately eg: stopwatches, thermometres, rulers, protractors.

Try out this website and play "The Ruler Game"

bit.ly/rulergame

Geometry - Position and Orientation

For this we will focus on map reading, using scale maps, calculating distance, using an atlas and grid work.

The following link has many fun maths games which will support new learning and help students practice loads of maths skills.  They are interactive and some of them can be set up as challenges against other people.  How do you fancy your chances in a maths challenge against your child?  A great way to pass a few hours on a grotty Sunday afternoon!

Shodor Maths Games and Activities

We also have 4 weeks where we will be studying Number and Algebra and this will include revising and extending our knowledge of number strategies.  We will be cross grouped for this and that means one teacher will teach a specific level and we will move to work with students on a similar level to us so we can problem solve together.

Homework Grids for you to go straight to:

Term 2:

Week 1 & 2

Week: 3 & 4

Week: 6 & 7

This is an excellent Website for students to get homework help and ideas. It has heaps of fun activities too!

OUR FAVOURITE "SPACE" WEBSITES:

NASA - This has loads of information for us to access.  The best way is to go to 'Students' and then to 'Research Tools'.

Zoom Astronomy - By using the menu bar we can find out heaps of facts about the planet we are researching.

Star Child - This site has 2 levels - both of them contain similar types of information but level 1 is a bit easier to understand.

Arty Astro - by going to the 'Explore' section we can find specific facts to help support our projects - and this site is really kid friendly and lots of fun!

We are already learning some fantastic facts about Space - and while we do this we are developing our research and presentation skills.  Come back and visit soon and you will see how much we have learnt and you may even get a chance to see some of our fantastic projects!

PEOPLE SAVERS COURSE

Our class took part in an excellent Red Cross provided training course in Week 2 of this term.  Take a look at some of the photos.

*#!*CAMP*!#*

While we were at camp we were lucky enough to experience
  • bush walking (3 hours!)
  • glow worms
  • abseiling
  • rock climbing
  • team challenge course
  • jet boating

We also had the opportunity to work co-operatively on photo challenges, sports games and camp concert presentations (which were hilarious!)

We feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to attend such a well organised and fun filled camp!  Our teacher keeps telling people when they ask her - "How was camp?"

"It was fantastic...for the kids!!"

I think Miss Gee needs more than a couple of hours sleep!!  She didn't look that flash when we got back!

Go to our gallery page to see more impressive photos of our fab camp.

LITERACY

Term 2:

To kick start our term we are taking a closer look at Anzac Day and what is means to us, our families and our community.  We are completing our own independent study and presenting our findings at our Class Assembly this Friday - come along and join us.  We are using a number of internet sites to help us with this study and Miss Gee has added a link to our project page for you to take a look at if you are interested.

 Anzac Project

Our class is going to get up VERY VERY early on Sunday morning - dress in our school uniform and meet Miss Gee ready for the local Anzac Dawn Parade in Bulls.  Hope we see you there!
